Put-In/Takeout Information

Mariners Point Park (kayak/canoe launch), 100 Kearney Dr., Joppatowne, MD 21085; (410) 612-1608; GPS N39 24.054' / W076 21.065'

Overview

The Bird River can be hard to traverse because the long-stemmed, brown-green sea grass grows up to the water’s surface. A channel is cut through during summer and fall for motorboats. Gunpowder Creek and branch trails are a 4-hour round-trip paddle.

The Paddle

The first visual of the park is a fun, tall, bright yellow rain-coated seaman statue. It’s worth a picture, but do it now; you won’t remember to take it on your way out. The second sight is a bevy of cement ramps and a massive lineup of motorboats waiting in line to launch. The park administrator will check you out; when he sees your car-top boat, he’ll send you on your way deeper into the park peninsula to the canoe/kayak launch area. As you zigzag around the massive parking lots, you begin to wonder if it’s you or the administrator who has lost his mind. If you are lucky, there will be other canoes and kayaks on the far edge of a grassy knoll. If not, look for a small white sign that identifies the launch.
